The City Naturalist - Giraffe
Photographer James Wendell was featured in Milk Gallery's Milk Underground in 2011, a bi-annual group show of works by the industry’s most visionary and provocative emerging photographers put on as part of Milk’s commitment to nurture the next generation of talent.
His series, “The City Naturalist,” explores the intersection and tension between nature and humans in urban settings.
This shot of a giraffe at the Bronx Zoo in NY initially gives the viewer an intimate look at the animal. Yet the wires that the giraffe is poking its head through create distance between the subject and viewer, with everything behind the wires being out-of-focus. We may have a good look at its face, but it is physically out-of-reach.
